Seven demonstrators were arrested after protests at a rally in Eastbourne on Saturday. Sussex police made the arrest after eggs and smoke bombs were thrown, during the march, organised to call for free education. The march turned ugly after a protester was injured and was refused medical attention at the scene. Student Luisa Thomas, is now in hospital and is expected to be discharged later this week.
Our correspondent, Danny Adams, attended the march and asked Protestors why they felt the rally was important.
Danny Adams:
Here on Preston Road, just outside the university of Brighton’s Eastbourne campus, over 300 students have gathered to call for free education. I spoke to a number of students, who expressed their anger at tuition fees.
Student 1:
We think its time that people know how hard it is to live off a student grant and how difficult it will be when we have finished university to pay back our debts.
Student 2:
We know that the fight for free education doesn't end at the end of this demonstration.
Student 3:
I think it’s unfair that we have to pay our way through university and end up with huge debts.
News presenter:
Those who were arrested during and after the protest will appear in Brighton county court next week.
News Presenter:
A female protester was injured during the rally, she lay on the ground clutching her leg in pain, as other protesters continued on the march. She is now in hospital and is expected to be discharged in a few days.
